Top 5 Teeth Tips for Halloween

23 Oct 2018

In the lead up to the sugary celebration that is Halloween, we can get carried away planning our trick or treat haul and forget about the long-term damage we could be doing to our teeth.

Whether you’re planning on heading out to knock on neighbour’s doors, or have some lollies ready at the front door, your sugar exposure will probably be higher than usual, which increases your risk of tooth damage and decay.

Livingston Dental Care has put together a list of their Top 5 Teeth Tips to limit tooth damage over Halloween.

“Follow these tips and you can still enjoy the Halloween season, just with less guilt and hopefully less damage to your teeth,” says Dr Deborah Lam, principal dentist at Livingston Dental Care.

Timing is everything:

Eat your lollies after meal time. Your saliva production will be higher, which helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and wash away food particles faster.

Choose carefully:

Avoid lollies that stay in your mouth for a long time, like lollipops or sticky toffee. Lollies that stay in your mouth longer increase your risk of tooth decay.

Check your brush:

Get Halloween prepping by making sure that your toothbrush is fresh. A worn toothbrush doesn’t so as good a job of cleaning your teeth. Ideally, they should be replaced every three to four months.  Check out Livingston Dental Care's Facebook page for their recycle initiative to see how you can swap your old brush for a new one free of charge!

Drink more water:

Fluoridated water helps prevent tooth decay, so follow up a sweet snack with a glass of water to wash them down.

Get a check-up:

Plan a check-up before or after Halloween with your local dentist. Regular check-ups can catch any problems early, so they are easier to ‘treat’!

“There’s nothing wrong with indulging over Halloween, just be mindful about how much you eat, and remember to brush your teeth before bed!” Dr Lam says.
