Getting a haircut can be a nerve-racking experience for kids and adults alike. What if the hairdresser doesn’t understand what you actually want? What if it’s little one’s first ever trim, and the hairdresser doesn’t take the time to softly introduce them to the experience?
Have no fear, Shape Up @ Barbertown are here to remove the uncertainty from your next haircut! Stylist Kiara loves working with her customers to create the perfect look and knows just how to handle particularly timid toddlers.
“One day, one of my little 5-year-old clients came in. He’s been terrified of haircuts for the last 3 years, but I’ve worked really hard to build a bond with him based on trust. One day, we finally broke through and he had a full haircut — clippers and all! No tears, no screaming! After the haircut he ran back into the shop to give me a hug. He later told his dad that he was still a bit scared of haircuts, but not scared of me!”
Barbertown only opened in March this year, but Kiara already feels at home in the community. “It’s just been really cool to see how supportive the community has been in making us feel welcome, and we have loved getting to know all of our new clients!” she said. And it’s no surprise that they have become so popular amongst locals:
“You get a complimentary beer, Coca-Cola, or water with your haircut, or a Pop-Top for the kids. We have a new, modern interior with a TV to keep you entertained while you wait,” said Kiara. “We also often get people asking if we do hot towel shaves. A lot of barbers don’t do them these days, but myself and my staff are able to and love to do them!”
When she’s feeling peckish, you can find Kiara visiting King Kong Sushi. She doesn’t drink coffee, but on those freezing cold mornings, she’ll head over to Jamaica Blue for a hot chocolate. Sometimes, you just need a bit of extra fuel to deal with interesting situations…
“The strangest thing I have experienced in my short time at the Centre, was when a young man walked into the shop, gave us a 10-minute comedy act, and then just walked out!”
Along with their awesome service, Barbertown also have a number of great hair products for sale. So, what does Kiara recommend for a gift? “Definitely out Uppercut Matte Pomade. It’s just a great all-rounder wax. It works for long hair, short hair, kids’ hair — everyone! It’s a medium hold, low shine wax that is water soluble, so it’s easy to rinse out of your hair at the end of the day.”
The next time you or your little one needs a haircut, make sure you visit Kiara and the team at Shape Up @ Barbertown. Come for their incredible skills and service, and stay for the fun atmosphere!
